Old foreign music is disappearing from domestic streams

Recently, more and more old compositions by foreign artists have started to disappear from Russian music services. Until September, such cases were isolated, now labels like Sony Music Group and WARP are removing songs from entire catalogs.

The Sony Music Group label was one of the first to announce the removal of old compositions from Russian platforms. Then the company announced its final exit from the Russian market, although in the spring it claimed only to stop work. Their catalogs include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and so on.

A similar trend is observed with the British independent label WARP, with which such artists as Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Flying Lotus, Mount Kimbie, Stereolab, Yves Tumor cooperate. As Kommersant writes, the label is small and its audience in Russia is also not that big. But still, renegotiation and extension of contracts takes much more time.

There is also the possibility of the departure of the big company Warner Music. Then a fairly large part of popular foreign music will also disappear from Russian streaming services. Now it is observed that the majority of digital distributors leave other labels as well, but they do so privately. According to experts, such a prospect can provoke a surge in piracy, as well as a reduction in user activity and even refusal of subscriptions.
