Russian universities reflect large DDoS attacks

According to the newspaper Vedomosti, Russian universities are now experiencing an increased number of DDoS attacks, the power of which has increased 8 times compared to the same period last year.

The number of DDoS attacks increased sharply between 10 and 23 June 2022, according to StormWall. Most of them were based on the HTTP protocol, peak capacity reached 300,000 requests per second – this is 15 times more than last year (then the maximum was at the level of 20,000 requests per second). According to iXBT.com, the universities of Nizhny Novgorod, Astrakhan, Tyumen, Kemerovo regions, as well as the Republic of Komi, Tatarstan, Buryatia and other regions were attacked.

According to Alexander Lyamin, CEO of Qrator Labs, the surge in DDoS attacks on educational institutions at this time is observed every year, because attackers thus try to ensure the unavailability of university websites and disrupt entrance exams. According to experts, the level of losses from DDoS that occur is still difficult to estimate, because cyber attack protection systems are built differently in different universities.
